I read a fantastic article in the New York Times online about semicolons, syntax, and punctuational literacy. Now I’m a fan of the semicolon in my own scholarly writing, but perhaps that’s its last true province— I have rarely used it when writing ad copy. When I saw the ad on the L train the other day, I have to agree that its use is “impeccable.”

Updating To WordPress 2.5: Stop Character Replacements

When we recently upgraded Sink Review to WordPress 2.5, I was dismayed to find the entire site riddled with jibberish that had replaced all special characters. When this had happened after a previous WordPress upgrade I fixed everything by hand, which, I admit, was rather stupid of me— but hey, I panicked and solved the problem the way I best knew how.

To effortlessly get rid of all these pesky gremlins, just delete these two lines from your wp-config file (lines 8 and 9):
define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8'); define('DB_COLLATE', '');
… and that’s it!

Another solution was recommended by a friend , but I don’t like using PHPmyAdmin if I don’t have to.
